episode 210 “By the Light of Dawn”

The mid-season finale of Shadowhunters directed by Joshua Butler has officially aired and we are all officially dead! Only joking of course, but what an absolutely spectacular episode it was! An action packed, stomach churning, edge of your seat thrill from beginning to end that left many fans passionately declaring this the best episode of the season so far. With the lives of every Downworlder in New York hanging in the balance, our favorite Shadow Squad attempted to thwart Valentine’s evil plan of activating the Soul Sword despite a mountain of obstacles at every turn. There were so many close calls and near death experiences for our favs we were holding our breath the entire time. The only thing we can say for sure after surviving this episode is, “How much longer is it until June 5th?” Because that’s when Shadowhunters will be returning for the remaining half of season two. And we can’t wait!

episode 209 “Bound by Blood”

Shadowhunters episode 9, “Bound by Blood”, premiered last Monday night on Freeform to a still rather shell-shocked audience, still reeling from the events in the previous episode.  With Valentine’s plan unfolding as we speak the entire Shadowhunter and Downworlder communities were on high alert.  The season really building up for a dramatic winter finale just around the corner, delves deeper and even darker each week.  No doubt everyone is terrified to see if Valentine can successfully annihilate the Downworlders (Boy let’s hope not!) after his chilling scene with the young warlock Madzie at the conclusion of last week.  Let’s jump in and find out how things are going for our favorite warlock and Shadowhunter duo.

episode 208 “Love Is a Devil”

Shadowhunters episode 8, “Love Is a Devil”, premiered last Monday night on Freeform with an unusual plot twist. Hints had been dropped by some of the cast via social media that it would be similar to season 1’s episode 10, “This World Inverted”. So fans were a bit prepared something crazy was going down, though I’m not sure they could have anticipated just how shockingly different this episode was going to be for some of our most beloved characters.

Shadowhunters episode 7, “How Are Thou Fallen”, aired this past Monday night on Freeform heavily billed as a major Malec relationship milestone. Eager fans were counting the minutes to see what would happen between their beloved OTP, Magnus Bane and Alexander Lightwood, on the heels of their first date in the previous episode. Several media outlets were also reporting the big event including a fantastic article in Out Magazine with exclusive photos of Magnus and Alec sharing some romantic time together. Saying the fandom was worked into a frenzy would be putting it mildly.

By the Angel! Episode four of Shadowhunters, aptly titled “Day of Wrath”, aired Monday night on Freeform leaving us completely and utterly traumatized! From start to finish we were on the edge of our seats as we watched our beloved characters thrust into a desperate and overwhelmingly perilous situation like nothing we’ve ever seen before on the show. One shockingly devastating event after another, told at a frenetic pace by writer Jamie Gorenberg, no doubt left audiences jaws hanging open with disbelief just as it did our own. As unforeseen injuries and deaths mounted, the episode unraveled into a scene of total chaos. By the end of the hour we could only scrape together what was left of our remaining senses to ask ourselves, “What the heck just happened?

Pardon us while we dry the remaining tears from our keyboards for this next review as we look inside Shadowhunters episode three, “Parabatai Lost” which aired this past Monday night on Freeform. A heart wrenching emotional roller coaster from start to finish that has literally left us speechless as we contemplate the deep underlying themes of friendship, brotherhood, and love between two Parabatai caught in the middle of a desperate crisis. Themes that were often woven into a tight braid where one cannot be so easily separated from the other. The bond has proven to be deeper and more complex than we originally thought.

The second episode from the new season of Shadowhunters,”A Door Into the Dark“, aired Monday night to a hungry audience anxious to see if the latest installment could meet the same level of intensity as the first. And boy did it ever! Right out of the gate we again see a deeply disturbed and frustrated Alec Lightwood, played by Matthew Daddario, attempting to punch away his pain in the training room. He and the other Shadowhunters still have not been able to locate his missing parabatai Jace Wayland, played by Dominic Sherwood. Alec’s killer blows are interrupted by Clary Fray, played by Katherine McNamara, who quickly becomes his next symbolic punching bag as he lays into her with one hurtful statement after another. The discord between them only exacerbated by Jace’s departure. The abuse doesn’t stop there as he lashes out at her again in the command center letting her know that she doesn’t belong in their world and she never will. This tirade results in Clary’s departure from the Institute and decision to return to her mundane life. Matthew Daddario delivers another strong emotional performance as he brings the audience deeper inside Alec’s agony. We witness first hand just how distraught and tormented he is, even more so than we saw in episode one.

The highly anticipated season two premiere of Shadowhunters aired last Monday night on Freeform with a jaw dropping new look and feel to the show that definitely didn’t disappoint the anxiously awaiting fans. With stunning new visual effects and a darker, grittier adult theme, gone were the brightly colored more whimsical looks of the previous season. One fan described the comparison between the two as “Wizards of Waverly Place transformed into The Walking Dead”, which quite aptly surmised the dramatic change, especially after a deluge of blood and death. With 1.19 million viewers tuning in for episode one titled “This Guilty Blood”, it far surpassed the season one finale last spring. This boost will no doubt bring legions of new support to the amazing Shadow World that has been so lovingly created by an immensely talented team of writers, producers, cast and crew.
