The Last Hunt is a short drama film released in 2016 and was screened at the Soho International Film Festival that year. The thriller was directed by Brock Harris and our dear Matthew Daddario! The drama won the award for “Best Short Film” at the Long Island International Film Expo in July 2017.
Cody and Daniel have taken the same hunting trip for over 20 years. However, at some point, Cody ate some bad venison and became infected with “prions”, a protein that causes other proteins to fold improperly in the brain. The disease is referred to as ‘Spongiform Encephalitis’. As his symptoms worsened, Daniel’s ex-girlfriend Crystal positioned herself as a caretaker, the two of them living in a trailer on the outskirts of town. When Daniel arrives at Crystal’s to take Cody on their annual hunt, he realizes quickly that Cody is no longer “all there”. Daniel suits up the delusional man regardless and they take to the woods. Crystal wakes up and finds a VHS tape in Cody’s place. Horrified, she pops it in the VCR and watches the disturbing content. In the footage, Daniel explains that they made a pact upon Cody’s diagnosis: once Cody’s sanity slips and he is no longer himself, Daniel is to put him down. Today is the day he intends to hold up his end of the bargain. With little time to intervene, Crystal calls her current boyfriend, police officer Mathias, who rushes to help her. It’s in this moment that we get lost in the thrill of the chase. Can Daniel go through with the pact? Will Mathias be able to stop him?
